Buying Condos in Hyde Park

Hyde Park is located along the lakefront on the south side of Chicago – roughly six miles from the central business district. It is a neighborhood that has recently come into the spotlight as the home of President Barack Obama. The Midway Plaisance is the site of “The White City” built in 1893 for The Columbian Exposition. A remnant of that great World’s Fair exists in The Museum Of Science and Industry, located at 59th and the Lakefront.

Condos in Hyde Park are great options for people who want to move to an affluent, educated and sophisticated section of Chicago. Hyde Park residents are proud to be denizens of one of the Chicago’s most politically independent districts. It is not unusual for children that grow up attending Hyde Park’s Kenwood Academy or U of C lab schools to return as students or professors of the renowned University of Chicago – noted for it’s Gothic architecture and unusually large number of recipients of the Nobel Prize – no less than 85!

If you’re interested in condos in Hyde Park, remember that the community at the condominiums that you’re looking at counts for a lot. Sometimes, the condominium’s community vibe will determine whether or not it’s a suitable property for you more than will the structure itself.

As home to The University of Chicago, Hyde Park is popular with professors and students both – as well as people who just enjoy being part of a “global village” that proximity to a world-class university brings. There is no other place quite like it!

While Hyde Park does tend to be a world unto its own, and residents often find no reason to leave, access to downtown is provided by car with a quick 15 minute trip up beautiful Lake Shore Drive or by rail either on the Illinois Central – part of the commuter “Metra” system – or on the South Shore line.

The best way to proceed is to know what you want from any condos in Hyde Park you might consider. Make a list of your needs and wants and prioritize them accordingly. For instance, you might “need” a condo with two bedrooms, but “want” one that includes parking. Lead off with your list of needs, but try to locate properties that provide as many of your wants as possible without going out of your budget. The selections of condos to choose from – and the price points at which they are available – are as diverse as the neighborhood itself.
